A Unique Niche in Footwear

The Adidas Stan Smith occupies a unique niche in the world of footwear. Its design closely resembles that of higher-end white leather shoes like Common Projects, making it an undeniable bargain when available for just $55.

The Review

Three Categories, Honest Takes

Form Factor — Adidas Wins

When it comes to classic silhouettes, Adidas takes the lead. Nike has yet to introduce a shoe that can rival the Stan Smith in this category. Despite my past disappointments with the quality of newer Adidas sneakers, there's something about the Stan Smith that compels me to purchase another pair. While I occasionally lean towards the chunky Air Force 1 or the bold colorways of Jordan 1s, sometimes all I crave are understated classics.

Quality of Build — Nike

Unfortunately, the build quality of the Stan Smith has noticeably declined. The 2024 version lacks the craftsmanship of the pair I owned in 2021. However, for the price point, they serve their purpose, and this experience has given me clarity about my footwear goals for 2025, particularly a pair of Common Projects.

Break-In Period — Approximately 2 Weeks

These shoes require about two weeks to break in fully. The first initial days can be painful, especially in the toe box. However, the most uncomfortable part is around the edges below my ankle, which still causes some chafing even after two weeks. Ultimately, they do become comfortable.

Size up. Going from 9.5 to a 10 made a significant difference in the break-in experience — the 9.5 was excruciating by comparison.

Scorecard

At a Glance

Category Verdict
Form Factor Best classic silhouette in the category — nothing from Nike comes close
Build Quality Declined since 2021 — adequate for the price, but a step down from earlier versions
Break-In ~2 weeks; size up to ease the process significantly
Value Strong at $55 — Common Projects alternative at a fraction of the cost

$55, size up, two weeks to comfort — the Stan Smith silhouette still earns its place in the rotation.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX-310 Series Headphones

Gear Review Budget Audio Face-off: Sony ZX Series Review Comparing the ZX-100, ZX-110, and ZX-310 for your everyday carry ~3 Models ~$10–$20 Price 2.5+ Years Longevity Table of Contents ① Build Quality ② Cost Comparison ③ Sound Quality ④ Overall Value ⑤ Upgrade Path Section I Build Quality The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
