Refreshing the Audio Technica ATH-M50x
*A long-term look at earpad maintenance and audio performance*
The Earpad Journey
After about two years of use, the original earpads on my Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones have deteriorated significantly, leading to white flakes on my shoulders. I decided to purchase some new aftermarket earpads for $20. Overall, they’re not bad—definitely larger than the originals. In hindsight, I might try velour pads next time for a softer feel. I also wish there was a replacement option for the headband, which is starting to flake badly.
Design Insights
An interesting feature I’ve discovered is that the speakers inside the M50x headphones are angled. This design enhances the audio experience by making the left and right channels more distinct, adding to the overall immersion when listening to music or watching movies.
Update on Velour Earpads
In March 2019, I realized I had barely used the M50x, and after two years, the new earpads disintegrated. I opted for velour earpads this time, but I regret that choice because it completely alters the sound signature of the M50s. While they may offer comfort, the traditional vinyl pads are superior for sound quality.
| Material | Comfort Level | Sound Fidelity | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Vinyl | Moderate | Excellent | Low (flakes over time) |
| Aftermarket Vinyl | High | Good | Moderate |
| Velour | Very High | Poor (muffled) | Moderate |
Conclusion
Maintaining the ATH-M50x involves earpad replacements, and while the cost of ownership can be frustrating, it’s part of the experience.
- →Earpad Replacement — A necessary maintenance step every ~2 years.
- →Headband Wear — A common point of failure that currently lacks an easy, professional replacement option.
