Overview

The Grado SR80e headphones are widely regarded as one of the best deals in audio. Second only to the legendary Audio Technica ATH-M50 series, having both in a modest headphone collection provides a sufficient range and options for most music enthusiasts. As an owner of both models, I can attest to the consensus that this combo is excellent.

Decision Process

I debated adding an open-air headphone for some time, considering options like the similarly priced Audio Technica AD700x. Ultimately, the retro styling and sound profile of the Grado SR80e won me over, and I'm very pleased with my choice.

Section III

Usage

These headphones are strictly for indoor use, staying close to my PC and PS4. I primarily reach for them when watching movies, playing video games, or enjoying music. Interestingly, I still prefer the M50x or MSR7 when listening to music on my iPhone, even at home.

Section IV

Sound Quality

While the Grado SR80e offers a fantastic sound experience, they are not perfect for every genre. Here are my observations:

  • Vocal Emphasis — The SR80e excels with music that emphasizes vocals and simpler instrumental arrangements (guitar, piano, etc.). They isolate and focus on the singer beautifully, which contributes to the sensation of being at a live concert.
  • Bass Performance — They struggle with heavy bass tracks, often sounding muddled when the bass competes with vocals. If the song has extreme high or low frequencies, the clarity may be compromised.
  • Best Fit — For songs with a stronger vocal presence and simpler instrumentation, these headphones shine, providing a rich and immersive listening experience.
Tip: These headphones perform best with acoustic and vocal-heavy genres; consider a closed-back alternative like the M50x for heavy bass or mobile listening.

Conclusion

In summary, the Grado SR80e headphones are an excellent addition to any collection, particularly for indoor use focused on vocal-driven music. While they may not suit every genre, their strengths make them a valuable option for those who appreciate live-like performances. Overall, I highly recommend them, especially at their price point.

The Grado SR80e remains a gold standard for entry-level audiophile open-back headphones.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX-310 Series Headphones

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
