Why I'm Trading the iPhone Air for the iPhone 17
Two weeks in California taught me that battery life and a second camera aren't optional extras.

Section I
The Trip That Exposed the Gaps
The Air had been fine for a year of ordinary use — email, texting, the occasional photo. Two weeks driving around California with GPS running most of the day was a different story.
By the second day I was hunting for a car charger just to keep the screen on for directions. And more than once I handed my phone off and borrowed a friend's 17 Pro Max just to get a usable second shot of something worth remembering.
Section II
The Air's Charms — and Its Limits
I want to be clear: the Air is a genuinely nice object. The 6.5-inch screen, the thinness, the lightness in the hand — none of that is marketing fluff, it's real and I noticed it every day. The tactile feel in-hand with titanium is nice.
But a phone that can't get through a day of navigation without help, and that only has one camera to work with, stops being a design conversation and starts being a liability. I did eventually figure out charging through the rental car; CarPlay I never did solve, and I stopped trying.

Section III
Where the 17 Pro Line Loses Me
Having lived with a 14 Pro before, I already knew the third camera and its zoom were never the selling point people made them out to be. Zoom on iPhones has just never been that good, Pro or not.
Strip away the vapor chamber cooling, and the Pro Max isn't offering much the regular 17 doesn't already cover. Same aluminum housing, same basic materials — the premium mostly buys you thermal headroom you'll rarely notice outside of sustained gaming.
Section IV
Living With the 17
The regular 17 covers the 90% case well: two cameras, battery that survives a real day of use, and a size that actually fits in a pocket without announcing itself.
The only thing I'll genuinely miss is that 6.5-inch Air screen. Everything else — the charging anxiety, the single camera, the CarPlay headache — I'm happy to leave behind.
