No Man's Sky, Take Two: Buying the Same Game Twice
Ten years and one platform later, a launch-day disappointment finally became the relaxing game I wanted.

Section I
A Second Chance, on a New Machine
For my first game on the new MacBook Pro, I went with No Man's Sky, mostly because it happened to be on sale. It felt like a low-stakes way to break in a new machine.
This wasn't my first time buying it, though. I picked it up on PS4 back on launch day in 2016, back when the game was, generously, a work in progress.
Section II
What's Actually Changed
The gap between then and now is bigger than I expected. Base building has real depth to it now, and piloting has opened up considerably — you can fly and command almost anything, not just your starting ship.
None of this feels bolted on. It feels like a studio that kept working on something long after most people would have moved on to the next release.

THEN VS. NOW
Launch Day vs. Today
The same game, roughly ten years and one platform apart.
| Specification | 2016 (PS4) | Now (MacBook Pro) |
|---|---|---|
| Launch day | Second purchase, on sale | |
| Base Building | Minimal | Deep, interactive ↑ |
| Piloting | Limited to your ship | Almost anything ↑ |
| Overall Feel | Promising but thin | Immersive, relaxing ↑ |
Section III
The Part I Didn't Expect
What surprised me most wasn't the features, though. It's that the game is genuinely relaxing to play — something I can't say for most games I pick up these days.
It reminds me of what made Minecraft click for so many people: no urgency, just a world you can lose yourself in for a while.
Section IV
Worth Buying Twice
Paying for the same game a second time isn't something I do often, but this is the rare case where it felt justified. The version I'm playing now barely resembles the one I bought in 2016.
If you tried it at launch and bounced off, it might be worth another look. Just don't expect the same game you remember.
