Section I

A Venerable Warrior, Finally Retired

The A32 5G was never supposed to last this long as a work phone. It did anyway, and in the process gave me a genuine soft spot for both Samsung's hardware and Android as a platform.

Its battery life, in particular, still outpaces phones released years later, including my personal iPhones. But battery life alone doesn't make a device usable when the processor and RAM start buckling under company chat and email.

Why the Flip 8

I wasn't shopping for a flagship experience so much as trying to fix a bottleneck. The A32 could no longer keep up with the basics of a work phone, and that was reason enough to move on.

The Flip 8 solves that problem completely, though it's worth remembering the comparison isn't really fair. There are several generations and a full market tier separating these two devices.

Early Impressions

The screen quality, battery life, and processing speed are all immediate, obvious upgrades. None of that is surprising given what's being replaced, but it's still satisfying to feel in daily use.

The second screen has turned out to be more useful than I expected. Being able to glance at notifications without unfolding the phone fits the way I actually want to interact with a work device.

Form Factor, and What's Next

The flip form factor is enjoyable, but living with it has made me understand the appeal of the fold models, especially something like the passport-style Fold 8. There's a practicality to that larger canvas that a flip can't quite match.

Still, it's early days with the Flip 8, and everything else about it, screen, battery, speed, has already outclassed both the A32 and my iPhones. The form factor question can wait.
