Overview

For just $5 at Target, you can grab a pair of Vivitar wireless Bluetooth earbuds. Known for their basic design, these earbuds are a budget option that resembles Apple AirPods in appearance.

The Essentials
  • Pairing Process — Do not expect a seamless experience; it is crucial to follow the provided instructions to avoid frustration. Many negative reviews stem from users not reading the guidelines, which is common with cheaper tech.
  • Design & Form Factor — The design is surprisingly decent for the price. They look good and feel okay, which is impressive for $5—making you wonder about Apple’s markup on their products.
  • Sound Quality — Sound quality is poor, described as tinny and harsh with little bass. While they may not satisfy audiophiles, they outperform some $20-$25 wired options.
  • Build Quality — The build quality feels flimsy, especially the case hinge, which requires gentle handling. Long-term durability is uncertain, as the earbuds might not withstand drops.
Tip: If you choose to use these, adjusting the EQ settings on your phone—specifically bass reduction—can help manage the harsh sound, though it may still be tiresome over time.

Updates from the Field
  • Update 5/1/23 — Using these earbuds required bass reduction settings on my iPhone, but they still became uncomfortable after a while. They serve as a functional novelty, but the sound quality is ultimately tiresome.
  • Update 6/3/23 — I've learned not to invest in cheap tech, as they contribute to landfill waste. Although I miss my original Gen 1 AirPods, I’m currently using these for workouts due to their convenience. I plan to upgrade to Gen 2 AirPods if I reach my weight goal of 155 lbs.

Closing Thoughts

Overall, these earbuds are a good deal for their price, ideal for casual use where losing them wouldn’t be a big deal. They also feature Type C charging, effectively giving you a free charging cable with your purchase.

A cautionary tale in budget tech—functional for the gym, but don't expect an audiophile experience.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
