The Austin Surplus Find

I got a chance to visit the Surplus Store in Austin and it lived up to its name in finding cheap Victorinox Swiss Army knives. They had them arranged in several set of bins ranging in price from $1 for basic 58mm Classics to $3-4 for 91mm and specialty scales 58mm Classics.

Pricing Tiers
  • Basic 58mm Classics — $1.00 per unit
  • 91mm Models — $3.00 - $4.00 per unit
  • Specialty Scales 58mm — $3.00 - $4.00 per unit

The $9 Haul

Most were in rough shape and had seen better days, but there are a few hidden gems. For a total of $9, I scored six 58mm Swiss Army Knives:

  • Memory — 58mm model with internal storage
  • Signature — 58mm model featuring an integrated pen
  • Rambler — Multi-functional 58mm with Phillips screwdriver
  • Classic (x3) — The quintessential small Swiss Army Knife
This is the price point that makes this hobby fun.

### Value Breakdown

The Memory, Signature, and Ramblers go for $15–20 each online, and the Classics go for at least $3 a piece.

Memory, Signature, Rambler~$1.50 avg$15.00 - $20.00 each
Classics (x3)~$1.50 avg$3.00+ each

Maintenance & EDC Update

Update - 7/1/22 - Cleaning 🧼

Finally got around to cleaning the knives I bought. Most were surprisingly already clean with no dust or debris between the scales.

I’m liking the Rambler and may use that for my EDC (Every Day Carry).

Always keep an eye out for the hidden gems in the surplus bins.

Gear Review Budget Audio Face-off: Sony ZX Series Review Comparing the ZX-100, ZX-110, and ZX-310 for your everyday carry ~3 Models ~$10–$20 Price 2.5+ Years Longevity Table of Contents ① Build Quality ② Cost Comparison ③ Sound Quality ④ Overall Value ⑤ Upgrade Path Section I Build Quality The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
