I picked up a 2015 Toyota Camry XLE as a replacement for my Lexus IS250. I'm optimistic it will deliver the famed Toyota reliability, but I'm hedging my bets with a $3,200 extended warranty. The Camry cost about $18,000 plus warranty, bringing the out-the-door price to around $23,000 — the top trim for the four-cylinder model, with only 88,000 miles on the clock.

2015 Toyota Camry XLE

No matter how I spin the math, the monthly cost to own any reasonable car runs about $350–$400. The Camry hits the high end of that range.

Section II

First Impressions — Old Reliable

Eh… it's a Camry, and it provides a smooth and reliable ride. Acceleration is modest at 8 seconds for 0–60, which is one second slower than the IS250. The ¼ mile time of 16.2 seconds is also a second slower — disappointing, since the IS250 was already slow to begin with.

However, with port injectors on a solid 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the ride is smoother than the similarly sized direct-injection V6 in the IS250, which could eventually suffer from carbon buildup. The eight-year gap (2007 vs. 2015) makes a world of difference in technology — Bluetooth, GPS, rear camera, and blind spot indicators all included.

The Upsides

  • Smooth ride — Port injection eliminates carbon buildup risk that plagued the IS250's direct injection V6
  • Modern tech — Bluetooth, GPS, rear camera, blind spot indicators; doors auto-lock and unlock
  • Comfort — Spacious cabin, supportive leather seats (not as soft as Lexus, but solid)

The Downsides

Wide turning radius (FWD design) and uninspiring acceleration. Still, it beats the IS250 which suffered from hesitation and misfires caused by carbon buildup — so the bar wasn't exactly high.

Section V

Planned Retirement — 2035

I'm aiming to extend the Camry's service life to 20 years (2015–2035). It might be ambitious, but with its reliable 4-cylinder engine and rock-solid 6-speed transmission, I'm confident it'll hold up — and that repair costs will remain manageable.

The previous owner's meticulous oil change cadence (every 5,000 miles) was a deciding factor in the purchase. Toyota may say 10,000 miles, but I prefer 5,000 — and so did the last owner.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...
