The Repair Process

The backlight on my Casio G-Shock DW-6900 stopped working, although the time display and all other functions were still operational. I suspected the battery might be low on power, especially since the backlight is a significant draw.

Battery Replacement Steps

After some research, I found the instructions for replacing the battery, which confirmed it uses a CR2016 battery. Here’s a summary of the steps I followed:

  • Gather Tools — You’ll need a tiny Phillips screwdriver to remove the back screws and a needle or pin to release the battery harness.
  • Remove the Back Cover — Use the Phillips screwdriver to carefully unscrew the back cover of the watch.
  • Replace the Battery — Gently release the battery harness using the needle or pin. This step can be tricky; I had to watch several YouTube videos and review the online instructions multiple times to get it right.
  • Insert the New Battery — Place the new CR2016 battery into the harness and lock it back in place.
  • Reattach the Back Cover — Screw the back cover back on securely.
Caution: Take your time with the battery harness catch to avoid permanent damage to the watch. This is the most delicate part of the process.
Additional Insights

Interestingly, the 2007 Lexus IS250 keyless remote also uses a CR2016 battery. I had a spare battery left over after replacing the batteries in all my IS250 remotes, so I didn’t need to buy one specifically for the DW-6900 repair.

### Battery Longevity I was impressed that the original battery lasted over 6 years (it was purchased in January 2015 and died around early 2021). Casio estimates a battery life of about 2 years, likely assuming more frequent use of the backlight, which would drain the battery faster. Although the watch might have lasted even longer on the original battery since only the backlight had stopped functioning, I didn’t want to test that theory, especially after hearing some owners report batteries lasting over a decade.

### Water Resistance Concerns I’m a bit concerned about the rubber gasket, as I worry the watch may no longer be water-resistant. However, overall, I’m very happy to have my G-Shock DW-6900 functioning again.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
