Overview of Adidas Stan Smiths
I recently picked up a pair of Adidas Stan Smiths for under $40, and after a full week of wear, I'm quite pleased with them. They have a thick leather upper and tongue, paired with a rubber sole, giving them a classic look that feels reminiscent of oxford dress shoes. Although I'm still breaking them in, I can already tell these shoes have a lot of potential.
Sizing
I opted for a size 9.5, and while they are snug, I anticipate that they will stretch out a bit, making them perfect for me. If you plan to wear them infrequently, consider sizing up, as breaking them in can take some time. Most people recommend going up a size for Stan Smiths, which I usually do, especially since my right foot is slightly wider.
Style
These shoes are a timeless classic with a sleek profile that fits almost any outfit. They have a narrower profile similar to Converse All-Stars but are easier to slip on than chunkier options like Adidas Superstars. They also serve as a great alternative to Nike Air Force 1s, although they don’t offer the same elevation.
Build Quality
I appreciate the thick leather uppers and simple flat sole. My experience with Superstars gives me confidence that these will be just as durable, if not more so. However, I've noticed that with many budget shoes priced below $80, there can be inconsistencies in stitching and stress points where the leather attaches to the sole. Some shoes have lasted for years, while others have fallen apart within months of minimal wear.
Overall Impression
If you can snag the Stan Smiths for $40 or less, they are a worthwhile addition to your shoe collection. They work well in rotation with other classics like Superstars, All-Stars, and Air Force 1s. Just be prepared for a lengthy break-in period; if you won’t wear them often, consider sizing up.
Update: 3/27/21 — Long Break-In Period
After about 2-3 weeks, the Stan Smiths finally broke in and now fit like a glove. Initially, the break-in process was challenging; there were days I questioned my purchase due to discomfort, particularly on the side of my foot by my small toe. But now? I love them. They stay white with minimal effort, as a quick wipe with baby wipes keeps them looking fresh.
Update: 4/26/21 — 2-Month Review
It’s been over two months since I got the Stan Smiths, and they’re holding up well. They still look good with regular maintenance and feel great on my feet. However, during a basketball game (don't ask), someone stepped hard on the toe box, causing a scuff that exposed some discoloration. I'll need to find a way to patch that up, possibly with some white paint.
Update: 6/5/21 — 3-Month Review
These shoes struggle in the summer heat due to their thick leather construction, which retains heat and doesn’t breathe well. I had to switch to my Superstars during the hotter months. Additionally, the toe box has picked up tears and scratches, which are degrading the leather surface. I'm starting to see the advantage of the rubber toe cap on the Superstars.
I may limit my use of the Stan Smiths to autumn and winter months and consider picking up another pair of Superstars.
Update: 4/23/22 — 14-Month Review
After 14 months, it’s probably time to replace my Stan Smiths, but they remain comfortable. I usually wear them on weekends, averaging 2-3 times a week and about 4-6 miles a day. I’ll likely experiment with ways to restore the white color before finally retiring them. Overall, they make for great casual footwear.
