An Unexpected Acquisition

A recent gift brought a new watch into my collection: a Zodiac Super Seawolf ZO9305. My initial thought was muted—just another dive watch. But the story behind its acquisition quickly piqued my interest. Zodiac, now under Fossil, is liquidating. This particular model, which typically retailed for over a thousand dollars, was bought for a mere $125. That stark price difference immediately commanded my attention, hinting at a broader discussion about value and perception within the watch world.

It also in many ways brought me back full circle to my old Quartz Zodiac Sea Dragon ZO2219 that was in a lime green color way and I sometimes regret selling, this newer and upgraded automatic ZO9305 is an excellent replacement.

Quality and Compromise: The STP 1-11 Movement

Holding the Super Seawolf, its premium feel is undeniable. The build quality, fit, and finish genuinely rival watches I’ve experienced at four-figure price points. It boasts specifications typically found in far more expensive pieces.

  • ETA 2824 clone (STP 1-11) — The heart of the watch, known for its specific quirks
  • Sapphire crystal — Durable and clear, resisting scratches
  • Ceramic bezel — Adds nice touch with a reflective finish.
  • Plush band — Supple rubber strap well-integrated
  • Crisp bezel action — Tactile and precise
  • Refined dial execution — Detailed and legible, belying its price point

There’s no trace of "budget" in its presence; it stands shoulder-to-shoulder with established premium Seiko dive watches.

Navigating the STP 1-11

However, online research quickly revealed common quality warnings regarding the STP 1-11 movement this watch uses.

One tell-tale sign of the STP 1-11 is a manual winding mechanism that feels notably harsh, almost like metal grinding, in contrast to the smooth action of more refined movements like the ETA 2892 in my Omega Seamaster. To mitigate common failures, always set the date outside the 8 PM to 4 AM window; setting the time to 6 o’clock first is a safe practice. Crucially, avoid manual winding altogether, relying instead on kinetic motion to initiate and maintain the power reserve.

Comparison to my old Quartz Zodiac Sea Dragon ZO2219

The ZO9305 Super Seawolf brings back memories and comparison with my older Quartz Sea Dragon ZO2219 that I regret selling.

But the ZO9305 is leaps and bounds superior in almost every way from the sapphire crystal, to better lume, bezel and a legitimate automatic movement.  The only thing going for the Sea Dragon was it was a reliable quartz and honestly a very good looking watch.

The Super Seawolf in many ways solves that problem and the more I wear it, the less I feel regret.

The true cost of an item is rarely its sticker price, but its perceived value and that is whatever you make of it.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX-310 Series Headphones

Gear Review Budget Audio Face-off: Sony ZX Series Review Comparing the ZX-100, ZX-110, and ZX-310 for your everyday carry ~3 Models ~$10–$20 Price 2.5+ Years Longevity Table of Contents ① Build Quality ② Cost Comparison ③ Sound Quality ④ Overall Value ⑤ Upgrade Path Section I Build Quality The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

MacBook Air 2017 - A1466 - Linux - Project + Install Advice

Linux · Dev Hardware · Field Notes My "New" Linux Laptop 2017 MacBook Air — $120 on eBay, Running Linux Mint $120 Per Unit (eBay) 2× Units Acquired 6–8h Battery Life 2.96 lbs I needed a portable laptop with good battery life and decent specs to write code while outside — mostly small-to-medium Python or ASP.Net projects and a few basic ML models. My HP 2016 i7 is too bulky, the HP i3 is hideous, so I replaced my old Linux laptop with not one but a pair of MacBook Airs picked up on eBay for $120 each. Why two? Originally I got the 256GB MQD42LL/A, and when pricing a 512GB SSD upgrade it was basically the cost of a whole 512GB A1466. Why pay $80 for a drive when $120 gets an entire computer? Eventually I'll get a newer M-series MacBook to fulfill my programming needs — but for $120, this is unreal value. Even after 9 years it looks modern and...
