2026 Wardrobe and Reflections on My 5-Year Spending Patterns
Intentional purchases, high-value basics, and long-term wear — a system refined over five years

As 2025 comes to a close, the focus turns to refining the wardrobe and budget for 2026. Over the past few years, a system has taken shape that prioritizes intentional purchases, high-value basics, and long-term wear. This year is about thoughtful upgrades, smart replacements, and sticking with what works.
What was surprising was how much goes toward clothing and shoes — for the past five years it's constituted roughly two-thirds of total expenditures. In comparison, very little is spent on hobbies and technology. But this makes sense when investing in more expensive, higher-quality clothing items.
The budget is $60 a week in discretionary spending for an annual $3,120 personal allowance — about one-third dedicated to planned purchases, and the rest for meals, drinks, and incidentals. With no major increase in spending, there's been no need to raise this further.
Notably, about $800 was spent on three iPhones (14 Pro, 16, and Air) over this period — with a goal to retain the Air for 4 years before upgrading again in 2029–2030.

Section III
Annual Spending Analysis — 2022–2026
While the plan was to increase spending to align with the 5-year average of ~$1,000, there's no desire to force purchases beyond what's needed. This allows for picking up higher-quality items and cycling out older lower-quality ones over time. Prices are also anticipated to increase, making it smarter to stock up sooner rather than later.
| Year | Spend |
|---|---|
| 2022 | $1,245 |
| 2023 | $740 |
| 2024 | $637 |
| 2025 | $1,461 |
| 2026 | $934 |
| 5-Year Total | $5,017 |
| 5-Year Average | $1,003 |
Section IV
Spending by Category
The bulk of spending for the past five years has been on clothing and shoes. Hobbies, tech, and other categories represent a much smaller share than expected.
| Year | Clothes | Shoes | Tech | Watches | Hobbies | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $523 | $110 | $225 | $329 | $58 | $1,245 |

| 2025 | $946 | $115 | $400 | — | — | $1,461 |
| 2026 | $494 | $100 | $240 | $60 | $40 | $934 |
| Total | $2,502 | $777 | $1,211 | $429 | $98 | $5,017 |
| % of Total | 49.9% | 15.5% | 24.1% | 8.5% | 2.0% | 100% |
Clothing and shoes together account for 65.4% of all spending — confirming the pattern. The goal is to continue investing in quality items that last, rather than chasing volume.
