As 2025 comes to a close, the focus turns to refining the wardrobe and budget for 2026. Over the past few years, a system has taken shape that prioritizes intentional purchases, high-value basics, and long-term wear. This year is about thoughtful upgrades, smart replacements, and sticking with what works.

What was surprising was how much goes toward clothing and shoes — for the past five years it's constituted roughly two-thirds of total expenditures. In comparison, very little is spent on hobbies and technology. But this makes sense when investing in more expensive, higher-quality clothing items. I'm also going to try going upmarket now and pickup Vuori T-Shirts rather than Uniqlo as the quality has diminished over the years.

The budget is $60 a week in discretionary spending for an annual $3,120 personal allowance — about one-third dedicated to planned purchases, and the rest for meals, drinks, and incidentals. With no major increase in spending, there's been no need to raise this further.

Notably, about $800 was spent on three iPhones (14 Pro, 16, and Air) over this period — while I wanted to try delay my next iPhone, I'm thinking to get the 18 Pro as battery life and camera are too much a sacrifice on the Air. I'll be able to re-coup the cost by reselling the Air.

Section III — Annual Spending Analysis (2022–2026)

I'll exceed my goal of $1,000 average spend per year as I plan to buy some overdue items like the Sandisk SSD and Western Digital HDD for $320 as I neglected to buy new hard drives every 3 years since 2017. I'll also switch to an iPhone 18 Pro, but offset the purchase by reselling my Air so I view that as a wash.

I should be able to reduce spending next year in 2027 to around $500 so that’ll bring me back to $1,000 annual average.

Section IV — Spending by Category

The bulk of spending for the past five years has been on clothing and shoes. Hobbies, tech, and other categories represent a much smaller share than expected.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX-310 Series Headphones

Gear Review Budget Audio Face-off: Sony ZX Series Review Comparing the ZX-100, ZX-110, and ZX-310 for your everyday carry ~3 Models ~$10–$20 Price 2.5+ Years Longevity Table of Contents ① Build Quality ② Cost Comparison ③ Sound Quality ④ Overall Value ⑤ Upgrade Path Section I Build Quality The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
