Breathing New Life into My HP 2016 Laptop

Windows 11, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD — a nearly decade-old machine still going strong

I recently managed to upgrade my trusty HP 2016 - ab292nr laptop — featuring a 6th-gen Intel i7-6700HQ processor — to Windows 11. Considering I primarily use it for minor tasks, this upgrade easily extends its life by another 5–7 years. It's pretty satisfying to see a nearly decade-old machine still going strong!

The biggest benefit: it's proving very useful as my iPhone backup system. I'm now hitting over 100GB on my iPhone storage and don't want to pay for more iCloud storage, so this is proving to be a cheaper solution.

The Hardware

Maxing Out Upgrades: RAM and SSD

To boost performance, I upgraded the laptop to 16GB of RAM and swapped in a 1TB SSD. Honestly, it might be a bit overkill given what I use it for, but DDR3 RAM is so cheap nowadays (around $12) that it felt like a "why not?" decision. The upgrades definitely made the system feel snappier, even if I don't push it to its limits.

Component Spec Notes
CPU i7-6700HQ 6th-gen Intel, 2016
RAM 16GB DDR3 ~$12 — practically free at today's prices
Storage 1TB SSD Notable speed improvement over original HDD
OS Windows 11 Upgraded from Windows 10
The Role

Purpose and Practicality

My goal has always been to maintain at least one computer for each major operating system, and this laptop fits nicely as my go-to Windows machine for everyday tasks like web browsing, Word, and Excel. Even with Windows 11 onboard, I'm still a bit hesitant to rely on it for more secure work — that's reserved for my iMac M3 and, eventually, a MacBook Air.

Meanwhile, my older 4th-gen Linux laptop is still performing well too, leaving me with a bit of a dilemma on how to balance them all. It's nice having options, but now I'm wondering which one will take on the daily grind.

The Satisfaction

The Fun of Tinkering

Part of the satisfaction came from the tinkering itself — figuring out how to squeeze more life out of a laptop I bought way back in 2016. There's something rewarding about keeping old tech running smoothly, especially when it still holds up after all these years.

Battery Life & What's Next

I was curious and have been using the laptop exclusively on battery, and it's able to last me several hours. Granted, I'm only doing some light tasks, but it gives me confidence I can travel again with this machine and not always need to be near a power outlet.

I also think it's time to switch this to Linux and purchase a MacBook Air to become my primary machine, as I don't truly trust it running on Windows 11. Many M1 series are selling for under $300, and I plan to make the switch in 2026.

Plan for 2026: convert this HP to Linux, pick up an M1 MacBook Air for under $300 as the new primary machine.

A 2016 laptop with Windows 11, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD — old tech, new life.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
