The Warning Lights

It finally happened—around 85,000 miles, my 2007 Lexus IS250 displayed the dreaded Check Engine Light and VSC indicators. I had just changed the oil at the dealer a few weeks prior and replaced the rear axle and front bushings, so it was frustrating to see my dashboard light up like a Christmas tree right after.

Diagnosis and Immediate Repairs

I returned to the dealer, where they determined the issues were a dead O2 sensor and a leaking valve cover gasket. They believe that oil dripping from the gasket fell onto the O2 sensor, leading to its failure.

Repair Costs

The total bill for the primary repairs came to about $1,300:

ComponentServiceCost
O2 SensorReplacement$600
Valve Cover GasketReplacement$700
Tip: Address leaking gaskets immediately, as dripping oil can frequently lead to the failure of more expensive electrical sensors.

Full Maintenance Summary

In addition to resolving the Check Engine light, I also had some other maintenance and repairs done recently. The total cost for the month reached $4,050, which included the drivetrain and suspension work completed just prior to the sensor failure.

Itemized Maintenance
  • Rear Axle Replacement — $1,700 to address drivetrain wear.
  • Front Bushings Replacement — $800 for suspension maintenance.
  • O2 Sensor & Valve Cover Gasket — $1,300 to clear the CEL and VSC lights and stop oil leaks.
  • Oil Change — $250 standard dealer service.
Keeping a classic 2007 Lexus in top shape requires staying ahead of the maintenance curve.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
