The Search for the Perfect EDC

After experimenting with various Swiss Army Knife models, I've concluded that the Victorinox Climber is the ideal choice for my urban EDC needs. Portability, weight, and a good pair of scissors are the three key factors I consider when selecting a Swiss Army Knife for everyday carry. Here are a few other contenders I considered:

  • Compact — Lacks an awl and a second blade.
  • Super Tinker — Features a Phillips head instead of a corkscrew.
  • Pioneer X — Has no bottom-side tools and an awl instead of a second blade.
Tools of the Climber

The Climber is a highly versatile toolset that fits perfectly in a pocket:

  • Large Blade
  • Small Blade
  • Can Opener
  • Bottle Opener
  • Scissors
  • Awl/Reamer
  • Corkscrew
  • Tweezers
  • Toothpick

Weight and Portability Considerations

While models like the Huntsman and Explorer offer a wide array of tools, the extra weight—about half an ounce more for the Huntsman—can make a noticeable difference in pocket carry. In an urban setting, I’ve found that the wood saw, while handy, isn't essential for my needs; it's more suited for camping or outdoor use.

As I’ve started incorporating an EDC torch or flashlight into my carry, weight considerations become even more critical. I’m currently debating between the Olight i1r and the Fenix e02, with a preference for the Olight i1r to complement the Climber.

Tip: It’s impractical to carry an entire toolbox; for major tasks like working on my car, nothing beats a simple dedicated socket set, which I keep in my trunk while carrying the Climber for smaller, everyday tasks.

Note: Surprisingly, the Spartan weighs practically nothing, but the added scissors in the Climber bump the weight up almost an ounce.

Closing Thoughts: Alox Pioneer X and Wine

While the Alox Pioneer X is visually stunning and carries a similar weight to the Huntsman, the price point for the Climber is more appealing. For purely functional urban EDC, the Climber strikes a good balance, and I appreciate the additional scissors. However, I do enjoy wine occasionally, and the corkscrew has saved me on more than one occasion, adding to the appeal of the Spartan and Climber models.

Update (4/21/21)

I recently picked up a newer Climber with translucent red scales, feeling more comfortable carrying it for EDC than my older version. Although both function perfectly well, I’m happier sporting the newer model, which adds a touch of freshness to my everyday carry.

Balancing functionality and portability is the secret to a great everyday carry setup.
