Review: Malibu Rum Black
*Exploring the darker, coconut-forward side of a classic liqueur*
Tasting Notes
While it may not be a true Cuba Libre—mostly due to the lack of a proper garnish—Malibu Rum Black has proven to be a decent option for a casual drink. The coconut flavor is quite pronounced, making it enjoyable both on the rocks and mixed with cola.
A suggested ratio of one part cola to two parts rum works well, adding a nice balance to the drink. I picked up this bottle for $10, which feels like a steal for a spirit. Though I am generally partial to dark rums from Bacardi, I found Malibu to be a reasonable alternative.
The History and Evolution
It is interesting to note that Malibu Rum is technically not a true rum; it is more accurately classified as a liqueur with rum.
- →Original Branding — The product was originally marketed under the name Coco Rico.
- →The Revival — The brand was later revived by the inventor of Bailey’s, who rebranded it as Malibu.
I have been enjoying Malibu Rum on the rocks lately. Its sweetness is quite noticeable, which makes it a bit indulgent for regular consumption.
| Component | Observation |
|---|---|
| Flavor Profile | Pronounced coconut |
| Mixing Utility | Pairs well with cola |
| Sweetness Level | High/Indulgent |
Final Thoughts
Would I buy Malibu Rum Black again? Probably not. While it is enjoyable, the sweetness is a bit too much for my personal taste. If you are a fan of sweet liqueurs or coconut flavors, it might be worth a try, but for my palate, I prefer something less sugary.
