Heritage and Design

The G-Shock lineup offers an impressive array of models, with countless color and design variations for each. Among them, the 5600 series stands out, and there are likely over a thousand different design combinations for this humble watch.

For me, the 5600 series carries the heritage of the original G-Shock, the 5000, while continuing its legacy into the present day. It's lightweight, unobtrusive, and packed with all the essential features you could want in a G-Shock. Although I prefer the light button placement on models like the 6900 or 9000 series, I've grown accustomed to the 5600's configuration.

There's something about the square face and shape that resonates with me—it even reminds me of my Apple Watch. I've traveled the world with my 5600, and it has proven to be more than adequate for my needs. You can often find them for a bargain price of around $50 to $80, depending on where you look.

My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
