Initial Setup

I've always been interested in trying a DAC (Digital Audio Converter) and amplifier for my headphones. After some research, I settled on the FiiO E10K Olympus 2. In hindsight, I might have preferred a more portable model that accepts audio line-in, but the E10K proved to be a solid choice when connected to my laptop. I also plan to build a 'soundbook' using my netbook, which adds to its utility.

Sound Quality

Using the E10K has improved my sound experience in several ways. Certain frequencies are now clearer, allowing me to hear details that were previously subtle. The overall music presentation feels more "forward," enhancing the listening experience. While this initially felt overwhelming, I've started to appreciate the refined soundstage that the E10K provides.

Compatibility and Performance

One notable observation is how poorly some of my cheaper headphones perform with the E10K. I had hoped that the increased power would improve their sound quality, but that hasn't been the case.

Note: While the FiiO E10K provides excellent clarity, it cannot overcome the hardware limitations of lower-quality, budget-tier headphones.

Overall Impressions

For the price I paid, the E10K has been a satisfactory purchase. I anticipate that with continued use, I'll grow more accustomed to its sound profile. I see the value in DACs and amplifiers and plan to explore more options in the future, once I have a clearer understanding of what works best for my listening preferences.

  • FiiO E10K — The primary DAC/Amp unit used for this test.
  • Sony ZX100s — The only pair of budget headphones that responded well to the amplification.
  • Soundbook Project — Future plan to integrate this setup with a dedicated netbook for a portable audio station.
Looking forward to fine-tuning my audio chain as my listening journey continues.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX-310 Series Headphones

Gear Review Budget Audio Face-off: Sony ZX Series Review Comparing the ZX-100, ZX-110, and ZX-310 for your everyday carry ~3 Models ~$10–$20 Price 2.5+ Years Longevity Table of Contents ① Build Quality ② Cost Comparison ③ Sound Quality ④ Overall Value ⑤ Upgrade Path Section I Build Quality The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads.   The Earpad Problem Over time, the earpads on the ZX-100 and ZX-110 disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310 comes with upgraded earpads that don't suffer from this problem — a clear win in the build department. Tip: If your earpads start to flake, it is a sign of material degradation; consider replacing the cushions or upgrading to a model with more durable synthetic lea...

While features are always a plus, my main priority is size. Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. 5600 Series For overall size, the 5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It's slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear.   Section II Best Compromise: G900...
