Building a Classic Collection

White shoes are an essential item in any wardrobe, much like blue jeans or a classic black or white T-shirt. While they do require more maintenance to keep clean, their versatility makes the effort worthwhile. Over the years, I’ve owned several pairs of white sneakers from brands like Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Reebok. However, I often only kept one pair, regardless of the color. Recently, I decided to remedy that and focus on building a basic collection of classic white sneakers. Two of the most iconic models I’ve added are:

  • Converse All Stars — An iconic, slim canvas classic.
  • Adidas Superstar — A timeless, chunkier silhouette.

These shoes come in various colorways, but investing in the classic white versions is a must before exploring other colors. Both models are widely available and often go on sale or can be found at discount retailers.

Great Deals on Classics

I managed to snag the Converse All Stars for about $40 and the Adidas Superstar for just $20. Both are inexpensive options that provide excellent value.

Caution: Breaking In Converse

Both models were originally designed as basketball shoes, evident from the intricate patterns on the soles. The Converse design is quite old, featuring a hard rubber sole that can be tough on the feet.

  • Try Before You Buy — If you’re not familiar with Converse, consider sizing up by half a size due to the toe box.
  • Adjust the Laces — Tightening the laces can help with comfort.
  • Break Them In — Treat new Converse like hard leather dress shoes; they require a breaking-in period before wearing them for extended walks.
In contrast, the Adidas Superstar offers a more modern feel, with a plush interior that requires little to no break-in time.

Which Ones to Choose?

If you can, I recommend getting both pairs. They each serve a unique purpose and can usually be found at reasonable prices, making it feasible to acquire both. However, if you need to prioritize your purchases, I’d suggest going for the Adidas first, followed by the Converse.

A well-curated sneaker rotation starts with the basics.
